EPM Platform Guide

Anaplan Implementation Cost: What Finance Teams Need to Know Before Signing

Anaplan is a powerful platform. It is also one of the most expensive EPM implementations a mid-market business will undertake. This guide provides a vendor-neutral breakdown of what you will realistically pay — and the questions every CFO should ask before committing.

Disclosure: Metapraxis is an independent FP&A consulting firm with our own EPM platform (Empower). We have no commercial relationship with Anaplan. The figures in this guide are drawn from publicly available sources, government procurement data, and industry benchmarks. We have tried to be accurate and fair — and we will tell you honestly when Anaplan is the right choice for a client, even when that means we are not the right partner.

What does Anaplan licensing cost?

Anaplan does not publish its pricing publicly, which is itself a signal. Like most enterprise software vendors, Anaplan uses a negotiated, relationship-driven pricing model where list prices are rarely what anyone pays. The following figures reflect typical market ranges for UK mid-market businesses, based on publicly available procurement data and industry sources.

Licence componentTypical range (UK, annual)Notes
Platform fee (base)£40,000 – £120,000Depends on data volumes and connected workspaces
Named user licences£800 – £2,500 per userFull users vs. view-only users priced differently
Model Builder licences£3,000 – £6,000 per userRequired for finance team members who build/maintain models
Support & maintenance18–22% of licence valueAnnual cost on top of base licence

A typical mid-market Anaplan deployment (15–30 named users, 3–5 model builder licences) will cost £80,000 – £200,000 per year in licensing alone, before any implementation services are included.

Implementation and professional services costs

Licensing is the smaller part of the total cost. Implementation — the professional services required to configure Anaplan for your business, integrate your data sources, build your financial models, and train your users — is typically 1.5x to 3x the first year's licence cost.

Engagement typeTypical total costTimeline
Single-use-case deployment (e.g., FP&A only)£80,000 – £200,0003–6 months
Multi-use-case (FP&A + workforce + sales)£200,000 – £500,0006–12 months
Enterprise / complex multi-entity£400,000 – £1,000,000+12–24 months

SI partner day rates in the UK market typically range from £800 to £1,800 per day, depending on the partner tier (Elite vs. Solution Partner) and the seniority of the consultant. Elite Anaplan partners command a premium; Solution Partners may offer lower rates but with less Anaplan-specific depth.

Hidden costs most finance teams don't budget for

The licence and implementation quotes are what most businesses focus on. What catches them by surprise are the costs that sit outside both:

  • Data integration: connecting Anaplan to your ERP, CRM, and HR systems requires middleware (ETL tools, iPaaS platforms) and ongoing maintenance. Budget £20,000–£60,000 for a typical integration build, plus 10–15% per year for maintenance.
  • Model maintenance: Anaplan models require ongoing maintenance as the business changes. Most clients retain a model builder (internal hire or ongoing partner retainer) at £50,000–£100,000 per year. This cost is rarely included in implementation quotes.
  • Retraining costs: finance team turnover means retraining new users. Factor £3,000–£8,000 per new model builder in Anaplan Academy training costs.
  • Model rebuilds: Anaplan models built quickly or without architectural rigour frequently require partial or full rebuilds within 2–3 years. Budget a contingency of 20–30% of the original implementation cost.
  • Licence uplift at renewal: Anaplan licences renew annually and price increases of 5–15% are common. Model this in your 3-year total cost of ownership analysis, not just year 1.

What you get — and what you are paying for

Anaplan's reputation is built on its Hyperblock technology — a genuinely differentiated in-memory calculation engine that handles very large, complex models with multiple simultaneous users in a way that traditional spreadsheet-based approaches cannot match. For large enterprises with complex, multi-dimensional planning requirements across multiple functions and geographies, Anaplan is a genuinely powerful tool.

For mid-market businesses, the question is whether that power is necessary. Many Anaplan implementations are driven by the platform's brand reputation or by the recommendations of consultants who earn their fees by implementing it — not by a rigorous assessment of whether Anaplan is the right fit for the specific planning requirements of that business.

The most common mistake in EPM selection is choosing a platform and then building a business case for it, rather than defining requirements first and then evaluating platforms against them. Anaplan wins that competition by default — because it is the platform most consultants know how to implement.

Alternatives to Anaplan — and when they make sense

Anaplan is one of several serious EPM platforms. The right choice depends on your planning requirements, your technical environment, your budget, and your timeline.

  • Pigment: a modern challenger with a strong UX and faster implementation timelines. Better suited to businesses that need to get something working quickly and have less complex multi-dimensional requirements. Lower entry cost than Anaplan.
  • Workday Adaptive Planning: strong for businesses already on Workday HCM — the native integration with Workday's HR data is a genuine differentiator for headcount planning. Less competitive for supply chain or sales planning use cases.
  • Metapraxis Empower: our purpose-built FP&A platform, designed for mid-market businesses that need board-quality reporting and driver-based planning without enterprise complexity or cost. Includes 45 years of FP&A domain expertise in the product design.
  • Outsourced FP&A: for businesses that need FP&A capability rather than an FP&A platform, our FP&A as a Service model delivers the reporting infrastructure and operating process without the platform investment — on a build-operate-transfer basis.

Questions to ask before committing to any EPM platform

  • What are the specific planning use cases this platform must support — and how complex are they? Have we documented this in requirements, or are we selecting a platform based on vendor presentations?
  • What is the total 3-year cost of ownership — including licence, implementation, data integration, model maintenance, and training? Have we modelled licence uplift at renewal?
  • Who will maintain the model after go-live? Do we have (or can we hire) the internal capability, or are we dependent on an ongoing partner retainer?
  • What does the implementation timeline look like? When can we expect to be producing board-quality outputs from the new system?
  • What happens if the implementation is late or over budget? Have we reviewed the implementation partner's track record on comparable engagements?
  • Have we evaluated at least two alternative platforms against the same requirements? Or are we treating this as a given that Anaplan is the right choice?

Metapraxis advises on EPM platform selection as part of our Software Project Services offering. We have no commercial relationship with Anaplan, Pigment, or Workday — which means we can give you independent advice about which platform best fits your requirements, rather than advice shaped by our implementation revenue.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Anaplan cost?+

Anaplan is one of the most expensive EPM platforms. Annual licensing for a mid-market deployment typically starts around $150,000, and once professional services, training and integration are added, all-in costs commonly run from £150,000 to £800,000 or more in the first year.

How is Anaplan licensing priced?+

Anaplan prices by workspace (model capacity) and by user tier, plus the modules and apps you deploy. Pricing is custom-quoted and not published, so the largest cost drivers are model size, user count and the number of planning use cases.

How long does an Anaplan implementation take?+

Anaplan implementations are typically the longest in the category, commonly 6–18 months for complex, multi-use-case deployments, and almost always require an external systems integrator. This is a major part of the total cost of ownership.

Is Anaplan worth it for mid-market companies?+

Anaplan is most justified for very large, complex multi-dimensional planning at enterprise scale. For many mid-market businesses, alternatives like Pigment or Abacum deliver the FP&A capability they need at a fraction of the cost and implementation time.
