What is FP&A?
FP&A — financial planning and analysis — is the finance discipline responsible for budgeting, forecasting, management reporting and the analysis that supports business decisions. It sits apart from accounting: accounting records and reports what happened and must be correct; FP&A explains why it happened and what is likely to happen next, and must be useful.
In practice an FP&A function owns the annual budget and the annual operating plan, the rolling forecast, the monthly management pack and variance commentary, the business cases behind significant decisions, and the models that connect operational drivers to financial outcomes.
What FP&A does: the core activities
- Planning and budgeting — setting the operating plan and the financial targets that follow from it
- Forecasting — maintaining a current view of the expected outturn, usually on a rolling basis
- Management reporting — the monthly pack, with variance analysis and narrative that explains the movement
- Business partnering — working with operational leaders on the decisions that create the numbers
- Decision support — business cases, pricing analysis, scenario modelling and investment appraisal
The FP&A cycle
Most FP&A functions run an annual planning cycle nested inside a monthly reporting rhythm: an annual budget or operating plan; a monthly actuals close followed by variance analysis and commentary; a forecast update on a monthly or quarterly cadence; and a quarterly re-forecast or business review that resets the outlook. The cadence is what makes the discipline work — an FP&A process that produces excellent analysis two weeks after the decision has been taken is not producing FP&A.
What FP&A services cover
FP&A services means accessing that capability without building the function internally. Engagements typically cover some combination of:
- FP&A reporting — designing and producing the management and board reporting pack each cycle
- Model build — a driver-based planning model connecting operational drivers to the P&L, balance sheet and cash
- Forecast operation — running the rolling forecast cycle alongside your team
- Budget cycle facilitation — running the annual planning process end to end
- Capability transfer — training an internal team to take the function over
The distinction from a bookkeeping or outsourced-accounting service is that FP&A is forward-looking and decision-facing. It is also why the two are rarely well served by the same provider.
When outsourced FP&A makes sense
Renting the capability tends to beat hiring when speed matters more than permanence: after an acquisition, during a value-creation plan, when a business has outgrown its bookkeeping but cannot yet justify a finance director, or when the skills needed now (model build, data integration, reporting design) differ from the skills needed in three years (running an established cycle). Where a stable function already exists and simply needs more hands, a hire is usually the better answer.

Is this right for you?
FP&A as a Service is particularly well-suited to:
- Growing businesses establishing their first FP&A function
- Organisations filling a temporary gap created by a departure or hire delay
- Businesses that need board-quality reporting but can't justify the full-time cost

Frequently asked questions
What is FP&A as a Service — how is it different from hiring an FP&A manager? +
FP&A as a Service gives you access to an experienced team of finance professionals plus the Empower platform — without the cost and time of recruiting, onboarding, and retaining a full-time hire. Unlike a contractor or hire, we also build the infrastructure and transfer ownership when you're ready to run it independently.
What does Build-Operate-Transfer mean in practice? +
Build means we configure the Empower platform for your business — integrating your data sources and setting up your reporting and planning framework. Operate means we run the monthly reporting cycle alongside your team while they learn the system. Transfer means we train your team to own and evolve it independently — the platform, processes, and capability are yours permanently.
How quickly can we get our first board-ready report? +
Most clients see the first board-ready output within 4–8 weeks of kick-off, depending on data complexity and the number of source systems to integrate. The initial diagnostic determines the exact timeline before the engagement starts.
Which EPM platform does FP&A as a Service run on? +
FP&A as a Service is built on the Empower EPM platform — Metapraxis's own practitioner-designed planning and reporting environment. Empower integrates with SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Workday, Salesforce, and most major ERP and data systems. For clients with existing EPM investments, we can also work within those environments.
What happens at the Transfer stage — do we lose support? +
Transfer means you own the capability — the platform, the model, and the operating rhythm. You don't lose access to Metapraxis: we remain available for model evolution, new business unit onboarding, or any complexity that warrants specialist input. The difference is that you no longer need us for the routine cycle. That's the goal.
