Why SAP customers need a separate FP&A layer
SAP S/4HANA and SAP ECC are world-class ERP systems. They are precise, auditable records of what has happened — every transaction, every posting, every cost centre movement captured with accuracy. That is exactly what an ERP should do. But an ERP is not a financial planning tool, and the gap between what SAP provides and what a finance team needs to plan, forecast, and report to the board is significant.
The evidence is visible in almost every SAP customer we encounter: a technically excellent ERP running alongside a parallel universe of Excel workbooks where the real FP&A work happens. The SAP actuals are extracted, pasted into spreadsheets, adjusted manually, and circulated as board packs. Every month, the same extraction. Every month, the same version control risk. Every month, the same hours spent on data reconciliation instead of analysis.
The problem is not SAP. The problem is using an ERP to do something it was not designed to do.
What SAP provides — and what it does not
What SAP does well
Transaction recording, general ledger, cost centre accounting, purchase-to-pay, order-to-cash, asset management, multi-entity consolidation, audit trail — all with enterprise-grade controls.
What SAP doesn't provide
Driver-based planning, rolling forecast models, scenario planning, board pack automation, FP&A workflow, assumption management, or business-user-friendly reporting without specialist SAP skills.
The typical workaround
Excel. Month-end extraction from SAP, manual reconciliation, workbook-based planning cycles, and board packs built in PowerPoint from static data that is outdated before it is printed.
The right architecture
An EPM layer above SAP that pulls actuals automatically, structures them around driver-based models, and produces board-ready outputs — with SAP remaining the trusted source of record it always was.
SAP Analytics Cloud and BW — why they often disappoint
SAP does offer native planning tools: SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) includes planning capability, and SAP BW/4HANA can be configured for reporting and analysis. For large enterprises with dedicated SAP Basis teams and platform administrators, these tools can work. For mid-market finance teams, they rarely deliver the value promised.
"SAC planning requires specialist SAP skills to configure and maintain. Most mid-market finance teams don't have those skills in-house — and the consultant who built the model isn't there when assumptions need changing in month-end. The result is a SAP analytics environment that the finance team can't actually operate."
The pattern is consistent: SAC or BW projects are scoped, implemented, and delivered. Adoption is lower than expected. Finance teams revert to Excel because it is more controllable. The SAP analytics investment sits underutilised while the spreadsheet dependency remains.
Metapraxis builds on top of SAP — but not necessarily inside it. Our Empower platform connects to SAP data without requiring SAP skills to operate or evolve.
How Metapraxis builds FP&A capability above SAP
Our approach to SAP FP&A follows the same 5-phase methodology that has worked for Metapraxis clients since 1979. The integration is clean, the model is driver-based, and the result is a system your finance team can run independently.
- Phase 00 — Diagnose your SAP environmentWe review your SAP configuration, chart of accounts structure, cost centre hierarchy, and data quality. We identify which SAP tables and views contain the data your planning model needs — and where the gaps and inconsistencies are before we build anything on top of them.
- Phase 01 — Build the data integration layerWe create automated connectors from SAP to your planning environment. Actuals flow on schedule — no manual extraction, no copy-paste, no reconciliation. The integration is designed above SAP: no ERP configuration changes, no Basis work required, no change management risk to your core system.
- Phase 02 — Build the driver-based modelWorking with your finance team and business leaders, we identify the 10–15 drivers that explain 80% of P&L movement: headcount, utilisation, volume, price, yield. Every financial line in the model is derived from a driver — not entered manually. The model connects SAP actuals to a planning logic that reflects how your business actually works.
- Phase 03 — Integrated reporting and forecastingBoard packs, management accounts, rolling forecasts, and scenario analysis — all built from the same driver model, all connected to live SAP actuals. Reports that used to take three days to produce are automated. Scenarios that required a new Excel workbook are updated by changing a driver assumption.
- Phase 04 — Transfer to your teamYour finance team owns the model, the data connections, and the reporting environment. They can update drivers, run scenarios, and produce board-ready outputs without calling us. SAP remains exactly as it was — your team now has the FP&A capability that lives above it.
SAP versions Metapraxis works with
Metapraxis has delivered FP&A implementations above the full range of SAP environments:
- SAP S/4HANA (Cloud and on-premise) — Direct integration via REST API and native HANA views
- SAP ECC (ERP Central Component) — Integration via SAP RFC connectors and BW extractors
- SAP Business One — ODBC and Service Layer API integration for mid-market deployments
- SAP BW / BW/4HANA — We can consume existing BW data marts or bypass them entirely and go direct to source
- SAP Analytics Cloud — Where SAC is already deployed, we can integrate Empower alongside it or replace the planning layer with a more finance-team-friendly environment
What your finance team gets
The output of a Metapraxis SAP FP&A engagement is not a dashboard. It is an operating system for your finance function — built on top of your SAP investment, run by your team, producing outputs your leadership trusts.
- Automated actuals flow from SAP — no monthly extraction cycle
- Driver-based P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow models with explicit assumptions
- Rolling forecast updated by changing operational inputs, not rebuilding workbooks
- Scenario planning: base, upside, and downside — all driven from the same model logic
- Board pack produced automatically from the model — not assembled manually in PowerPoint
- Full version control and audit trail — every assumption, every change, every output is traceable
SAP FP&A: frequently asked questions
Can SAP be used for FP&A? +
SAP is an ERP system — it captures transactional data accurately but is not designed to be an FP&A tool. Finance teams using SAP for planning typically build complex BW reports or export to Excel. Metapraxis connects a driver-based EPM layer above SAP that uses SAP actuals as its input, giving finance teams planning, forecasting, and board reporting capability without touching the ERP.
Does Metapraxis Empower integrate with SAP? +
Yes. Empower connects to SAP S/4HANA, SAP ECC, and SAP Business One via direct database connectors or API. Actuals flow automatically from SAP into the Empower planning and reporting environment — no manual exports, no version control issues. The integration is built above SAP, so no ERP configuration is changed.
Why do SAP customers still rely on Excel for planning? +
SAP captures transactions precisely but does not provide a finance-friendly environment for planning and forecasting. BW and SAP Analytics Cloud can be configured for planning, but both require specialist resources, long implementation timelines, and significant ongoing maintenance. Most mid-market finance teams default to Excel because it is faster and more controllable — at the cost of version risk, manual effort, and limited scenario capability.
What is SAP FP&A consulting? +
SAP FP&A consulting helps finance teams that run SAP (S/4HANA, ECC, or Business One) build the planning, forecasting, and reporting capability their ERP doesn't provide. It involves integrating SAP data into a driver-based planning model and connecting that model to a reporting environment that finance teams can operate independently.
How long does it take to connect SAP to an EPM platform? +
A typical Metapraxis SAP integration delivers clean, automated actuals flowing into Empower within 2–4 weeks. The full engagement — driver models, integrated planning, and board reporting — typically takes 12–18 months from diagnostic to transfer. The first board-ready report is usually live within 4–8 weeks of kick-off.
