Causal was acquired by Lucanet and is now Lucanet xP&A. If you're an existing Causal customer weighing "Causal vs Lucanet" — or planning a clean migration off the platform — here is an independent, vendor-neutral guide to your best options, the migration risks, and how to choose. Figures as of mid-2026.
Disclosure: Metapraxis is an independent FP&A consulting firm with our own EPM platform, Empower. We have no commercial relationship with Causal or Lucanet. We consult on platform selection and will tell you honestly when another tool is the right answer — even when that means we're not the right partner. The acquisition facts below are drawn from Lucanet's own press release and public reporting; commercial details should be re-confirmed with Lucanet at the time of any decision. Figures are current as of mid-2026.
Causal was a London-founded FP&A and financial-modelling platform that set out to replace spreadsheets with a faster, more collaborative way to build models, budgets and forecasts. It raised roughly $25.9M across a seed and Series A from investors including Accel and Coatue, and grew to serve 300+ finance leaders worldwide.
On 31 October 2024, Lucanet — a German CFO software group behind a consolidation, close and reporting suite — announced its acquisition of Causal. In Lucanet's words, "Causal, key player in the financial planning and analysis market, becomes part of the Lucanet Group." For Lucanet this was the third acquisition in two years (after Amana and ementexx), part of a strategy to build out its CFO Solution Platform with a cloud-native Extended Planning & Analysis (xP&A) layer.
Causal has not been shut down. The product continues to operate, and within the Lucanet portfolio it has been rebranded as Lucanet xP&A and is being integrated into the wider Lucanet CFO Solution Platform. The founding team became Lucanet's xP&A centre of excellence. What changed is ownership and direction: the roadmap, pricing and support now sit inside a larger consolidation-led group rather than with an independent, founder-led FP&A product — which is exactly why a population of existing customers is now searching for "Causal alternatives" before any forced migration lands.
An acquisition is not a fire alarm, but it does change the calculus. The independent, fast-moving product you bought is now one module inside a broader suite with a different centre of gravity (financial consolidation and close). That has practical implications worth planning for:
Do this first, whatever you decide: export a complete copy of your Causal models — formulas and driver logic, not just output values — plus your underlying data, while your account still has full access. Causal supports CSV/Excel export and has an API. A clean archive of your model means a future decision is yours to make on your timeline, not the vendor's.

Lucanet announces the acquisition of Causal. "Causal joins the Lucanet Group."
Causal positioned as Lucanet xP&A within the Lucanet CFO Solution Platform; integration with Lucanet's consolidation and planning modules begins.

"Best" depends entirely on what you valued in Causal. If it was speed of modelling and a modern, non-Excel interface, the modern planning tools below are the closest fit. If it was staying in spreadsheets, the spreadsheet-native options matter more. And if what you actually want is to stop re-buying tools and get the model right once, an independent partner with its own platform is worth a look. We list Empower first because it is the option that combines independent advice with our own platform — but we say plainly below where each alternative wins.
| Alternative | Best for | Why it fits ex-Causal teams | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Empower (Metapraxis) | Mid-market teams who want advice + an independent platform | Practitioner-built driver models with hands-on FP&A consulting; Build-Operate-Transfer so your team owns the model; independent ownership means no acquisition-roadmap risk | Strongest paired with consulting; not a self-serve SMB freemium tool |
| Pigment | High-growth companies wanting a modern, visual platform | Closest "modern, non-spreadsheet" feel to Causal; strong UX, collaboration and scenario modelling for ambitious planning | Higher cost and longer build than a lightweight tool; see Pigment cost guide |
| Abacum | SaaS and VC-backed finance teams | Fast deployment, SaaS-metric models, modern interface — a natural home for tech-sector teams that liked Causal's speed | Less suited to complex non-SaaS models; see Abacum pricing |
| Cube | Teams that want to stay in Excel / Google Sheets | Spreadsheet-native FP&A layer — keep your existing spreadsheets but add database control, versioning and consolidation | Spreadsheet dependency at scale; see Cube cost guide |
| Datarails | Excel-centric SMB finance teams | Wraps governance, reporting and consolidation around existing Excel workbooks — low change-management cost | Best for reporting-led use cases; see Datarails cost guide |
| Jirav | Smaller finance teams wanting driver-based planning | Lightweight, quick to stand up, driver-based forecasting and dashboards at an accessible price point | Less depth for complex multi-entity models; see Jirav cost guide |
| Drivetrain | Teams wanting connected, driver-based planning | Modern driver-based platform with broad integrations and a planning-first focus, positioned against the newer cohort | Newer entrant; validate integrations against your stack; see Drivetrain cost guide |
⚠️ Caveat on staying: Lucanet xP&A may still be the right answer — particularly if you also need financial consolidation and close, where Lucanet is strong. The point of this page is not "leave Causal." It is to make sure the integrated direction is a deliberate choice for your requirements, not a default you drift into at renewal.
A platform change triggered by an acquisition is an opportunity to fix the model, not just move it. Work through these before committing to any destination:
Metapraxis advises on exactly this kind of migration as part of our Software Project Services and FP&A as a Service. We have no commercial relationship with Causal, Lucanet, Pigment or any other vendor here — so the recommendation is shaped by your requirements, not by implementation revenue. If you're new to the terminology, our FP&A glossary entry is a useful primer.
